Venus
is the second planet from the sun.
Venus is called the Evening Star and
Morning Star because the ancient astronomers
thought Venus to be two separate bodies
because it looks so bright to us from
Earth.

Venus and Earth are almost the same
size but it is slightly smaller than
Earth. Venus is the closest planet to
Earth at 25 million miles.
The temperature rises to 484 degrees
Celsius on the side facing the Sun.
This makes Venus the hottest place in
the solar system after the sun.
The surface of Venus has many craters
which were made by meteorites and asteroids
crashing into the planet and also mountains,
lava plains and volcanoes. Maxwell Montes
is the highest point on Venus. It is
more than 7 miles high.
Venus spins very slowly as it orbits
the Sun, spinning on its axis once every
243 Earth days. On Venus, the sun rises
in the West and sets in the East. This
planet is unusual because it rotates
in a direction opposite that of all
of the other planets.
